BIO

Rose-Mary Faulkner is an emerging glass artist based in Canberra, ACT which is Ngunnawal, Ngunawal and Ngambri land. She graduated from the Australian National University School of Art & Design, Glass Workshop, in 2015 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts and then completed honours in 2016. Since then, Rose-Mary has been working extensively to expand and develop her artistic practice. She is a studio tenant at Canberra Glassworks where she primarily makes her work. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally (Australia, Berlin, America, Japan) and has been acquired as part of the national glass collection at the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. Her work recently toured the United States as a finalist in the 2018 Bullseye Emerge exhibition.

In 2018 she won the National Emerging Art Glass Prize, (Wagga Wagga), and spent six weeks at Northlands Creative in Lybster, Scotland, taking part in intensive classes. The same year she held her first solo exhibition, PROFILE, at Canberra Contemporary Art Space, with a body of work that developed from the processes and ideas she had developed in her honours year. In 2019, Rose-Mary was a finalist in the inaugural Klaus Moje Glass Award (Canberra Glassworks), alongside established and notable Australian glass artists.  Her most recent group exhibition was the 2020 Megalo International Print Prize (Canberra) for work she developed during her residencies there in 2017 and 2019.

Her ability to teach and communicate ideas and processes around glass making has been recognised by a number of established artists including Australian artist Kate Baker and Italian artist Silvia Levenson, with Rose-Mary being the technical assistant for their master classes. Most recently she undertook this role for Kirstie Rea and Mel Douglas in their 2021 masterclass, Conduit. In 2019 Rose-Mary was the recipient of an ArtsACT activities grant that provided financial support to fund a self-directed residency in her studio. This enabled her to create a new body of work for Upending Expectations: Contemporary Glass. In addition to her exhibition work, Rose-Mary has a small production line using the offcuts of her decal work to create jewellery and homewares. This allows her to re-use material into new work that would otherwise be discarded, and to consider extensions of ways that we use and wear glass in our everyday lives. Rose-Mary is passionate about children’s education in the arts, and is currently undertaking a Masters in Education as well as working in the museum sector with young people’s engagement and exhibition experiences.
